Trabajar la paciencia como virtud / Cultivate patience as a virtue

  Empecé teniendo un lema: “Hay que trabajar la paciencia como virtud”. Se lo robé cuando tenía 11 o 12 años a la novia de mi papá. Transité mi adolescencia permanentemente recordándolo, y al sentir que comenzaba mi adultez, me sentí lista para agregarle mi aporte personal. El lema, entonces, quedó de la siguiente manera: “Hay que trabajar la paciencia (sí), pero también la capacidad de saber cuándo no esperar más como virtudes”. 

Hoy siento que es el día ideal para modificarlo nuevamente. Hay lemas más permanentes, pertenecientes a estructuras más estables. Por ejemplo, la frase que se lee en la bandera de Brasil “orden y progreso”, vinculado a sus metas. Mi lema es como yo, cambiante. El lema es una expresión que funciona como una guía de conducta. Por lo tanto, cuando quiero cambiar de conducta, cambio mi lema. 

Mi ideal en este momento es “trabajar la paciencia y la constancia como virtudes”. 

Para que algo nuevo crezca, primero es necesario plantar la semilla. Luego, tener la consistencia de nutrirlo todos los días. Al principio parece no haber progreso, mas es sólo la formación de las raíces. Si se resiste la tentación de abandonar el cuidado, con el correr de los días, florece aquello que queríamos hacer realidad. La espera siempre es recompensada. 

Suele haber una concepto erróneo, una carga connotativa negativa fruto de malos entendidos. La espera no es una pérdida de tiempo. En la espera se hace mucho más que no hacer nada, sin menospreciar el valor de no hacer nada. El italiano tiene un concepto exquisito, “dolce far niente”, literalmente el placer de no hacer nada. Pero la paciencia requiere trabajo, necesita de la constancia de continuar con los pequeños rituales que son el latido de nuestra existencia. 

Lo mundano a veces puede parecer insignificante, puede resultar aburrido. Sin embargo, lo mundano es indispensable.

    I began with a motto: "One must cultivate patience as a virtue." I borrowed it when I was 11 or 12 years old from my dad's girlfriend. I journeyed through my adolescence constantly reminding myself of it, and as I felt my adulthood beginning, I felt ready to add my personal touch to it. The motto then evolved into the following: "One must cultivate patience (yes), but also the ability to know when not to wait any longer as virtues."

    Today, I feel it's the perfect day to modify it once again. There are mottos that are more permanent, belonging to more stable structures. For example, the phrase on the Brazilian flag "order and progress", linked to their goals. My motto is like me, ever-changing. A motto is an expression that serves as a guide to behavior. Therefore, when I want to change my behavior, I change my motto.

    My ideal right now is to "cultivate patience and perseverance as virtues."

    For something new to grow, you must first plant the seed. Then, you must have the consistency to nurture it every day. At first, it may seem like there's no progress, but it's just the formation of roots. If you resist the temptation to neglect care, over time, what you wanted to make real will blossom. Waiting is always rewarded.

    There is often a misconception, a negative connotation born from misunderstandings. Waiting is not a waste of time. In waiting, much more is done than doing nothing, without diminishing the value of doing nothing. The Italians have an exquisite concept, "dolce far niente", literally the pleasure of doing nothing. But patience requires work, it needs the constancy of continuing with the small rituals that are the heartbeat of our existence.

    The mundane can sometimes seem insignificant, it can become boring. However, the mundane is indispensable.
